Calvinism in the Southern
Baptist Convention today is not something to be feared or something to be
stamped out as some critics would lead you to believe. The resurgent
Calvinism in the SBC in these modern times is simply a rediscovery and a
reclaiming of a vital and defining foundation of our Southern Baptist history.
The founders of the Southern Baptist Convention were for the most part evangelistic Calvinists. Names like Basil Manly, Sr., P.H. Mell, John L. Dagg, James P. Boyce, John A. Broadus are names any serious student can research in a matter of minutes. The rediscovery of their theological position which is unquestionably Calvinistic is sometimes a shock to the modern Southern Baptist who has been led to believe that Southern Baptists and the theology of Calvinism are and always have been incompatible. The current crop of Calvinists within the Southern Baptist Convention is not a group of radicals who would lead the SBC down the road of hyper-Calvinism. The new generation of Calvinists within our convention is as evangelistic as any Southern Baptists have ever been and probably more so than many non-Calvinists in our midst. This is not a movement that threatens our cooperative missions endeavors nor is it a movement that removes the responsibility of evangelism from local churches or individual Christians. This is a movement that simply asks "Who were we in 1845? What did we believe then? If our predecessors thought those doctrines were so important why then did we change? And finally, are those doctrines still valid today?" There is no Calvinist agenda within the SBC. No takeover plot by SBC Calvinists has been discovered. No political maneuvering has taken place or is planned. This is simply a grassroots movement begun by Southern Baptist folks who seek to know the truth and serve the Savior. We invite all Southern Baptists to examine the Doctrines of Grace more commonly called "Calvinism" in light of Southern Baptist history and identity.
